About City

Japan is a world apart – a cultural Galápagos where a unique civilization blossomed, and today thrives in contrasts of traditional and modern. The Japanese spirit is strong, warm and incredibly welcoming. Japan is a leading nation in scientific research, particularly technology, machinery and biomedical research. Japan leads the world in robotics production and use.

Yokohama city and port, capital of Kanagawa ken (prefecture), east-central Honshu, Japan. The second most populous city in the country, it is a major component of the Tokyo-Yokohama metropolitan area, the largest urban agglomeration in Japan.

The city has served as a gateway to the world and played an important role in the development of modern Japan. The city has cultivated a wide range of art and culture through its distinct and appealing cityscape and local resources, including historic buildings around the port and other waterfront locations that attract both local residents and tourists. The City of Yokohama is currently promoting the Creative City Measures in order to realize autonomous self-reliant development and increase new values and appeal in the city in the future.

Towards the end of the Edo Period (1603-1867), during which Japan maintained a policy of self-isolation, Yokohama's port was one of the first to be opened to foreign trade in 1859. Consequently, Yokohama quickly grew from a small fishing village into one of Japan's major cities. Being the first port city opened to the world in 1859, Yokohama has a blended atmosphere of multiple cultures and architectures with a large international presence, ranging from delicacies of the restaurants in Chinatown to English garden all blended in the Japanese culture and traditions.
